Lost Water! Remainscape

Andy CampbellOpening Up

Lost Water! Remainscape? (LWR) is a digital literary project sponsored by the AHRC at Lancaster University, UK, under Digital Innovation in Water Scarcity in Coimbatore. It visualizes water scarcity in Coimbatore, South India, a region facing prolonged water stress and recurring droughts due to climate change and urbanization. Drawing on archival maps, historical records, and oral narratives, the project represents Coimbatore’s waterscape through poetry, bilingual text (Tamil and English), videos, images, and interactive digital forms developed using Blender, Adobe Animate CC, HTML, CSS, and JQuery. Tamil poetry was authored by Jagadeesh, while Shanmugapriya T developed the bilingual narrative and translations, with technical support from Mohana Priya and Dharan Raj. Structured into four sections—Introduction, Tank, River, and Photo Animation—the project explores historical tank systems from the Karikala Chola period, animated reconstructions of the Noyyal River, and the present condition of water bodies through interactive elements, short video tours, and simple game mechanics. This work is submitted for both Indian and general category. This has been reviewed in Reviews in Digital Humanities and exhibited at ICIDS 2024.
