Infinity Spin

Andy CampbellOpening Up

Infinity Spin is a virtual environment for 360° poetry, which is accessible by mobile phones. The application shows a line of text, which surrounds users like a panorama. Hereby the text line can never be seen as a whole but only in sections on the user’s displays and is revealed by rotating around oneself’s body axis. By reading the sentence, which is quoting itself according to the principle of a Mise en Abyme, the readers find themselves in an endless loop. The performative act of turning around includes the whole body as part of the process of reading and immediately transforms its interaction with the media apparatus and the text into a concrete physical experience.
The virtual design is barely reduced to the lettering. It gets along without any competitive pictorial illustrations so that language becomes a bridge between the real and virtual. In this way at the intersection of new media and literature the text creates a situational moment, which is clearly located in digital space and at the same time points beyond both a commenting (on images) function and the style of a paper reading.
