Framing Gaza

Andy CampbellOpening Up

“Framing Gaza” is a data-driven investigation and shared resource that turns mass media coverage of the Gaza war into something journalists and researchers can systematically explore, question, and reuse. We collected more than 25,000 articles published between October 7, 2023 and October 7, 2024 from 16 major English-language outlets in the US, UK, France, and Germany, then transformed this “big news data” into structured datasets using text-mining and association-rule mining (Apriori) to surface recurring frames and linguistic patterns in how the active war is portrayed.

The work is not a single article but an ecosystem: an open dataset, documentation and reading tools that help non-technical users interpret the rules, and hands-on workshops with journalists from the MENA region who use these outputs to pitch and publish original stories. Our website links both to these stories and to the underlying data, inviting others to extend, critique, or repurpose our work.

By opening the full pipeline, from scraping, to modelling, to reporting, “Framing Gaza” treats big news data as shared civic infrastructure, enabling participatory, collaborative investigations rather than a one-off piece.
