Diver Quilt Magnet generates a near infinite series of fictional creatures. When you start the work, a creature comes alive with a name, a life and an embodied animated self. It exists and is unique, has a digital existence. However, to create a new creature, you must first end, kill, destroy the creature you’ve brought to breath. And when you kill that creature, it becomes extinct, a certificate is issues and its name recorded in an evolving log.
It will never appear again, as the only one of its kind.
While the work has humorous elements and is bright, colorful, animated and strange, the message is vitally important. Human development, including the mining, energy, land-use and waste associated with digital infrastructure, results in the loss of unique more-than-human animals and plants and other creatures. We are creating something and causing the loss of many others.
As well as the loss of unique and beautiful creatures, the modern content machine is also built on the ephemeral nature of throwaway media. We consume and consume and consume. We experience things briefly, throw them away and demand more. These are briefly existing monsters, small hits of serotonin and pleasure. Must always have more.
Diver Quilt Magnet is part creature generator, part fictional life builder, and endless cycle of creation and destruction. We can bring beauty into the world. And we equally destroy it.
Play/read/destroy/repeat.
