Decked Out in Drochthátal: A Short Story in Various Parts

Andy CampbellOpening Up

_Decked Out in Drochthátal_ was originally conceived as part of my undergraduate degree in English and Creative Writing. I’d always had a love of video games and their engagement with narrative structures, and wanted to bring that to my writing by mimicking their conventions in Word Document form. Once the piece was removed from the constraints of my course however, I was able to fully realise its potential as an interactive fiction game, and that is what you see here.
In terms of influence and setting, I spent many summers as a child visiting family in Co. Donegal, Éire, and was enchanted by the landscape. Though the churning sea, unforgiving cliffs, and bones in the sand had amused me as a child, as an adult they interested me as a fruitful setting for cosmic horror. _Decked Out in Drochthátal_ has been my attempt at merging both the ancient voices of Ireland’s West Coast with an exploration of the relationship between choice and agency in a medium that encourages both, but in a setting where neither are quite what they seem to be.
The game is not set up for mobile access, and is best experienced on a laptop or PC.
