#BLUD

Andy CampbellOpening Up

#BLUD is a cartoon/video game hybrid created by a team of 5 – two artists, two programmers and one writer. It features traditional hand-animation and is told in episode-like segments. It has a total playtime of ~10-14 hours, allowing players to explore the town of Carpentersville and follow protagonist Becky Brewster from field hockey freshman through to becoming a vampire-slaying monster hunter. (Still a freshman by the end though. Alas, there are some things you can’t surmount as easily.) Becky is aided in her monster fighting journey with an ancient grimoire, which also functions as a real-world cookbook, with some recipes came from my Mom and Grandma. It also heavily features an in-game social media system, with a meta commentary about the blood-sucking nature of technology in our modern lives. I’m giving a talk at the Game Developer’s Conference this March about the last point, about the process of fictionalizing social media in games (https://schedule.gdconf.com/session/game-narrative-summit-goals-mission-writing-in-blud/908973).

TL;DR
Part cartoon, part video game, part cookbook, part social media system – #BLUD covers a range of writing that could only be presented in a new media format.
