360 VR | World Champions… In the Shadows

Andy CampbellOpening Up

My entry, “360 VR | World Champions… In the Shadows,” produced by story time, originally in Arabic, is an immersive documentary short utilizing 360-degree Virtual Reality. This work tells the story of the Egyptian Street Football Team, who won the 2025 Homeless World Cup. The team, mostly composed of individuals from social care institutions, achieved this major victory without any official or institutional support.
This piece transforms a standard report into a participatory spatial experience, elevating the voices of these overlooked champions.

The significance of the interactivity a crucial tool for narrative immersion. The 360 VR format allows the viewer to physically transition into the champions’ worlds: from the corridors of the social care institution where they were raised, to the vibrant yet challenging atmosphere of street play in a popular Egyptian neighbourhood, and finally to their training at a modest club despite limited resources. This active engagement allows the viewer to discover and understand their daily lives, immediate environments, and needs, making the consumption of the story a powerful act of empathetic exploration.
