What sets Within and Against apart is its use of algorithmic composition to continuously generate poetry that is never quite the same. Each line in English offers stillness, depth, or surrender , and each opposing Guajarti line resists with motion, heat, or conflict. The reader is not simply a viewer but a listener to two voices negotiating meaning in parallel. The beauty lies in their contrast, their refusal to mirror, and the tension that emerges between silence and sound.
Against and Within is a response to Within and Against, to complete an opposition. By placing Gujarati and English lines in deliberate contrast, this work avoids mere translation and instead stages a poetic dialogue — a dissonant duet between inner calm and external chaos, between cultural introspection and global articulation. Deena wanted to create a response to this inner dialogue from the other side of the equation–from a native English speaker grappling with foreign realities.
