I wrote this in response to my own personal experiences of living with and travelling/not travelling with a refugee, and because of the rhetoric that is so common now in the UK and around the world about refugees, migrants, borders and nationalism. This is a semi-fictional diary or record of my experiences leaving my partner behind when I go abroad, and was partly inspired by the cruelty of the UK’s visitor visa policy. I used Shorthand and Felt to create the piece, and experimented with different levels of interactivity: in the end, I thought this was the most effective way to tell the story. The story is currently only viewable via the link, although I would be happy to make it more publicly visible later on.
